4 Ways To Protect Your Hearing When Mowing

When you are mowing the lawn, hearing loss is one of the risks you face. This is due to the noise produced by the lawn mowing machine. The cool thing is that there are plenty of ways in which you can protect yourself from the risk. Some of the things you can do include:

Limit your noise exposure

How big is your lawn? The larger it is, the longer it will take you to mow it. For you to reduce the amount of time you are exposed to the noise, you should consider mowing the lawn in parts.

After every few hours, you should take a break from the lawn mowing machine.

You can have a water break or do anything that will give your ears a break from the annoying noise.

Wear hearing protection

Even when you are taking a break from all the noise, you need to wear hearing protection devices. The cool thing is that there are plenty of these devices in the market that you can go with.

There are headphones, earplugs, ear caps, and many others. It’s up to you to choose the ones that are ideal for you.

For you to get the most from the protection devices, ensure that you wear them properly with the right fit. You also need to take good care of them, so that they can last for a long time.

When it comes to headphones for mowing, you should clean them at least once a week so that they can retain their great look.

Are you using earplugs to protect your hearing? You should take care of them depending on their type. If you are using one-use protection devices, you should discard them as soon as you use them.

If you are using the long-lasting protection devices, you should only consider discarding them when they get too hard and uncomfortable to wear.

Monitor the volume of your devices

Are you one of the people that love wearing radio headphones when mowing? It’s easy to raise the volume of the devices to the extent that your ears are uncomfortable when mowing.

For you to be on the safe side, you should keep a keen eye on the volume that you are using.

Many people tend to raise the volume until they can’t hear the powered reel mower anymore. Don’t do this as you end up damaging your ears.

You are better off hearing some noise, than causing damage to the ears. If you can’t hear the lawnmower anymore, the volume is most likely too high.

Replace the hearing protection devices

It’s common for the headphones and earplugs to get damaged with time. For example, they might lose their cushion, among many other things.

For you to have a good fitting and ensure that your hearing is protected enough, you should replace the devices when the time is right. As a rule of thumb, you should replace the units when you notice any flaws with them.
